Dog Coat

The two girls for whom I made the two pinks hats have a little terrier and I had plenty of yarn left over (and my left over yarn stash is already full!) so I decided to make a little sweater for the puppy so they could all have matching outfits.

I have made several sweaters for my dog Ginger using this same basic pattern.  I can’t remember where I found the original idea for the pattern as it was years ago and it is a very basic design.

I never bothered to write down the pattern until now.  I make the two pieces, seam them together then add a ribbed edging around the neck and around the entire lower edge of the sweater.  I always make the underbelly piece in a rib so it is stretchy and easy to get on and off.  Since the top piece is just a rectangle, it is easy to add any sort of stitch or pattern.  You could also actually add “sleeves” for the front legs by ribbing around the leg holes, although after my first sweater I found Ginger could move around more easily if I just left the holes untouched without adding “sleeves”.

I’m finally getting around to taking and loading some pictures of the coat I made for Ginger a few years ago.  This one is made as above, except I used a color slip pattern for this coat.
